Basic Life Support (BLS)

Our BLS course is the provider-level standard for anyone who responds to cardiac arrest as part of their job. In a single hands-on session you will practice high-quality CPR on adult, child and infant manikins, run an AED, manage an airway with a bag-mask device, and work as part of a resuscitation team using closed-loop communication. Every skill is taught to current American Heart Association guidelines and verified through a live skills test before you leave.

What You'll Learn in Our BLS Course

Gain the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to respond confidently during cardiac and respiratory emergencies.

  • High-Quality CPR

    Compress 2–2.4 inches at 100–120 per minute with full recoil for adults, children and infants.

  • AED Use and Safety

    Apply pads, clear the patient, deliver a shock and resume compressions in under ten seconds.

  • Bag-Mask Ventilation

    Open the airway, seal a pocket mask and deliver two-rescuer bag-mask breaths without over-ventilating.

  • Choking Response

    Relieve airway obstruction in responsive and unresponsive adults, children and infants.

  • Team Resuscitation

    Assign roles, use closed-loop communication and swap compressors every two minutes.

  • Opioid & Special Situations

    Recognize opioid-associated emergencies, assist with naloxone and adapt CPR for drowning victims.

Course Content

Course Outline

Instruction is split between short briefings and manikin time. Expect to spend most of the class on your knees, hands on a chest — not sitting in a chair.

  1. Scene Safety & Patient Assessment

    • Scene size-up and personal protective equipment
    • Checking responsiveness, breathing and pulse in 10 seconds
    • Recognizing agonal gasps as cardiac arrest
    • Activating the emergency response system and getting the AED

  2. High-Quality Adult CPR

    • Hand placement, depth of 2–2.4 inches and full chest recoil
    • Compression rate of 100–120 per minute
    • Minimizing interruptions and maximizing compression fraction
    • Using real-time feedback devices on the manikin

  3. AED Operation & Defibrillation

    • Pad placement for adults and pediatric patients
    • Shockable versus non-shockable rhythms
    • Clearing the patient safely before a shock
    • Special cases: wet skin, chest hair, pacemakers, medication patches

  4. Airway Management & Ventilation

    • Head tilt–chin lift and jaw thrust for suspected spinal injury
    • Pocket mask technique for a single rescuer
    • Two-rescuer bag-mask ventilation with a proper seal
    • 30:2 compression-to-ventilation ratio and continuous compressions with an advanced airway

  5. Child & Infant BLS

    • Two-thumb encircling hands technique for infants
    • 15:2 ratio for two-rescuer child and infant CPR
    • Compression depth of about one third of chest diameter
    • Locating a brachial pulse on an infant

  6. Team Dynamics & Special Situations

    • Clear roles: compressor, airway, AED, team leader, recorder
    • Closed-loop communication and constructive intervention
    • Opioid-associated life-threatening emergencies and naloxone
    • Choking, drowning and cardiac arrest in pregnancy

  7. Skills Test & Written Exam

    • Adult CPR and AED skills test
    • Infant CPR skills test with bag-mask ventilation
    • 25-question multiple-choice exam
    • eCard issued the same day

Before You Arrive

  • No prior certification or medical background required
  • Arrive 15 minutes early to complete registration
  • Wear comfortable clothing — you will kneel and work on the floor
  • Be able to compress a manikin on the ground for two-minute cycles
  • Bring a photo ID and, if renewing, your current provider card

Earn your BLS Provider Certification

Pass the skills test and written exam and your digital provider card is issued the same day — usually before you leave the building. The card is valid for two years and is accepted by hospitals, clinics, nursing programs and licensing boards.

  • How is BLS different from a CPR & AED class?

    BLS is the provider-level course. It adds two-rescuer CPR, bag-mask ventilation, team dynamics and a written exam, and it is the card hospitals and clinical programs ask for. Our CPR & AED class is the layperson version — same lifesaving compressions, without the team and airway components.

  • How long is my certification valid?

    Two years from the date of the class. We recommend renewing in the month before your card expires so there is no gap in your employment file.

  • What happens if I fail the skills test?

    Your instructor coaches you through the skill and lets you retest during the same session. If you still need more practice, you can return for one free retest within 30 days.

  • Do you offer CE or CME credit?

    Yes. CE and CME credits are available for eligible healthcare professionals — let us know when you register and we will issue the documentation with your card.

  • Can you run a class at our hospital or clinic?

    We do. We bring manikins, AED trainers and bag-mask devices to your site and schedule around your shifts. See our corporate and onsite training page for details.
